Get a price on a rebuilt unit from your Caterpillar dealer. They will give you a list of things they want done before they will warrantee it. Mostly it's flushing lines and the oil cooler. Lots of people rebuild converters, and you can probably get a better price than Cat, but you know it's done right. Cat did 3 converters for me in the last ten years, and I was never sorry. WHOEVER you select, make sure up front what the charge will be to disassemble and inspect your unit, in case yours is too far gone to repair economically. Cohn & Son in Indiana nailed me on a Clark converter some years back. They shipped it to BPT in New York and when the estimate came back for 7500.00, I told them to send it back, as I could get one for 5500.00 at the time. Instead of throwing it all in a box, they re-assembled it (with all the old seals and gaskets) and charged me 2016.00. With Cat, inspection fee is 4 hrs. of shop rate, at the time 500.00, which is included in the rebuild price if you let them do it. Keep your eyes open when dealing with aftermarket rebuilders.
