Timing the Pony Motor of a Cat D2

How do I set up the timing of a pony motor on a D2 Cat? It has a Wico XH magnito with the rotor having different position depending on where the gear is set. It has a window in the distributor cap for timing. Is there a timing mark on the crankshaft somewhere? Should the mag snap over like on my John Deeres? Have any articles been written on this subject?
