The Case E series is a good old workhorse, the things to check are the engine for blow by as those engines do not have liners so should it be worn out its a re-bore,check the shuttle that it is strong in forward and reverse, lift it up on the stabilizers and spin the wheels by hand, listen for any noise or slop, spin the wheels with the engine and listen for noise, see that all the gears work and that it does not jump out of any,the brakes were never a strong point but they should work, check the swing tower for play as well as all the pivot points, there will be a bit of play but you don't want any wallowed out holes, see that all the cylinders are dry and holding,if you are not familiar with backhoes get someone along that is,a backhoe that looks fairly reasonable suggests that it has been looked after, one that looks rough usually means it been treated rough.
