JD 1010 Crawler

this is for sale within a couple of hours drive from me, building a shop right now, need something to landscape with, any big problems to this model?
There is also a TD14 for sale,Diesel, same distance in the opposite direction, has a very similar FEL setup, it runs with no known issues,has a ROPS, is quite a bit older, but is double the price.
Which would be better? Won"t be worked hard, or often.

Neither one has a lot of new parts available. So, either way if you need something, you have to scrounge a bit.

I've got a 1010 crawler-loader and love it. It's a first-year 1960 model.

I also had a TD14 and hated it. Mostly because of the hand-clutch which is a pain to use when running a loader. Also - used parts were much harder to find in my area. That being said - I still have an Allis Chalmers HD6 with hand-clutch and I like it. But - it's dozer, not a loader and used parts are more plentiful also.

As I see it - $2000 for a running 1010 crawler loader is a good deal. Running is no guarantee that it won't fall apart a week after you buy and need $1000s in repairs - but that goes with ANY used machine.

I worked on 1010s when new. I cannot name any major design problems with the 1010 gas-engine crawlers. In some ways they were more durable then the larger 350s that followed.

Other poeple on this site will tell you the 1010 as a disaster for Deere. All I can tell you is - ask anyone who tells you that exactly what those so-called design problems are.

My only complaint with the 1010 is lack of aftermarket parts support for the engine series. Many parts must come directly from Deere Co. But - fix an engine correctly once - and I doubt you'll ever have to do it again. That is, unless this is an all day, every day, all year - use machine.

I agree I've had a couple of 1010s and still have loader. Some say they were problematic but I bought used machines and once I fixed them they gave many hours of trouble free use. This loader had a bad final drive when I bought it, I rebuilt it and have worn out the pins and bushings twice and still going. Final parts are easy to find but some parts are not readily available. Does anyone know what the approx weight of this machine would be?

The 1010 crawler loader without needed counterweights in the rear weighs 9,350 lbs. With the 5 counter weights OR 2 counter-weights and a rear-ripper - it weighs 10,350 lbs.
