Ditch Witch w/backhoe

Having trouble getting fire to my Ditch Witch. It"s a 1970 model with a Continental 4cyl. gas engine.

After sitting up for a few months I had no fire to any of the plugs. Replaced the wire that a mouse ate from the coil to the distributor but still no fire!

I"ve got 12VDC from the key switch to the coil. Plug wires are all tight. Rotor & dist. cap are clean. Points are clean & gapped.

I"m thinking that the condensor could be bad.

Any thoughts?

Replace the points. I've run into many machines that have sat for awhile, including my own, that wouldn't run without changing the points. On my little dozer I had put a new set on and then it didn't get run for about 6 months, and then wouldn't start when I tried it. In that case Iwas in a hurry and didn't really want to make a trip to town so filed and sanded, with no results. I even went as far as finally taking them off and hitting the faces with my disc sander and they still wouldn't work. Finally bit the bullet and made a trip to the store and got a new set, and she fired right up. Don't know what it is about points nowdays, but every set I've seen lately that goes for more than a few months without being run seems to be a lost cause when it comes to getting them to work. Better off to just replace them and save yourself alot of time and headache. That said, yes, the condenser could also be bad. For no more than both parts cost, you might as well go ahead and replace it when you do the points. Good luck.

Thanks Wayne, I did just that this morning & you"re right it fired right up. Like you I finally got fed up & went to NAPA. Thanks again.

Glad to hear it. You know I've started old engines that haven't been run in 15 years without doing anything but filing the points with an emory board, but something about the new points in, at least, the lasty 5 years make them just stop passign current if not used for awhile, and filing just doesn't work......And they call what's happening in this world 'Progress'....yeah, right....
