Can someone tell me the differences between the two tractors? I know they have the z134 engines what about gas tank lights wheels etc. As always thanks for your knowledge...Bobby
 
Just click on 'tractor photos', in the left column. There should be a dozen pics of both. FEMA website has close ups. I have almost one of each, the 50 is the only dead horse. I am going to presume the heavier, more adaptable steering was the main mechanical change- I don't say improvement- the solid bar workbull front axle is only needed with an industrial loader or 'in the woods' work. Drawback of a 40 or 50 over... under? a 35? steering is not an improvement unless powered, the airfilter is a mile away under a complex fragile grill, a heavy awkward hood, a manifold that is different from a 35's in that the carb bolts are almost a 'captured nut' affair, with a muffler above it nearly touching the gas tank- and all that makes it seem like you are sitting on the floor compare to driving and looking down the hood of a 35. A 65 has all those dreary changes, but the HP and size make it worth the bother, otherwise, 35's and 135's- except the hoods once again, are perfection in their power range....
 
Hey Tony, I could take that bothersome F40 and dead 50 off your hands and bring down that Standard diesel 35 from Altona to replace them, its still available.

But seriously, that F40/50 manifold is a real PITA to remove the carb nuts. I have one little old stubby ford wrench that I use to get them off, but it's still a pain.

No Dan, that is a good place for it. Altona is where all old Standards should go to die...
I really don't have a bone to pick with 40's or 50's, except as I still need to put all my antique collection to work now and then, the steering and hoods irritate me more than those on a 35. That is my prefered ride for day to day misery... and in this weather, it is misery....
