Farmall Super C Steering Seals

I have a farmall book and it talks about replacing the seal under the bearing by using a piece of tin or equivalent. I realize I need to remove the bearing, but I do not understand the technique they are referring to. Does anyone have any insight on the seal install? Thanks

Just take it apart and you will see the seal. Install it like any other seal, I just tap it in gently with a hammer. Be sure to install the gear so the unused teeth engage the worm gear to lessen the slack.

Are they suggesting wrapping thin metal around the splines to keep them from tearing up the seal as it passes over them?

Grease the lips of the seal and simply CAREFULLY work it over the splines. Or, wrap the splines in a single layer of thin packaging tape before inserting the shaft into the seal.

Quote"install oil seal with lip of seal facing up toward worm wheel. Use tin sleeve or shim stock when reinstalling worm wheel shaft to prevent damaging the seal" unquote.

It appears they are recommending something around the spline
as you said to prevent damage to seal. Parts on order, I will know more when I get them. Thanks

thanks, would not have thought about that. Hopefully parts be here soon

That bearing can be hard to remove but it does need to come off to get the new seal installed. Ive done several and sometimes its a mess to get the bearing off.
