About the ford N paint, I discovered several years ago as I was re-doing M old "Cora" that the early ones had a darker gray and the only place I was able to get it was thru Orschlen Farm Store in Missouri. Thier"s was made by Vansickle Paint Co. in Grand Island, Neb. and at that time they only put it up in gallons so I got two gallons down at Houston, Mo. and still have a little left. The gray on the 8 Ns was a little lighter. Most all Ns I see at shows they have used the lighter gray. I wrote to Vansickle Paint one time and got a answer back and He said it was called Battle Ship gray to start with. I don"t know if this is of interest to anyone but just thought I"d throw it in. Just started snowing again here (East Peoria, Ill.) I can"t hardly wait till mushroom time. boy its cold too. Pat. P.
 
Go to link_disallowed.They have correct paint. Aerosol,pints and gallons.I am paint my '39 9n as we speak.Hope this helps; don't forget the hardener to bring out the shine.
 
Rustoleum machinery gray is a close match. Ford used leftover machinery gray after building The rouge river plant and had lots left after all the new equipment was painted. Henry never wasted anything if he could avoid it. Scrap wood leftover from building cars and truck became the first charcoal briquettes..
 
I use Car-Quest for my paint. I think it"s by Tisco. They have a gray (9N & 2N). The medium gray is for 8N"S. In spray, guarts & gallons.
 
Great info. I have been considering repainting my 2N which is currently Red and Gray. I might have to stop in at the Orschlen in Houston (Texas County Mo.) on my way to Montauk State Park to go Trout Fishing.
 
The Van Sickle paint for the 9N/2N is Old Ford Gray, code #475. Still available. The 8N and hundred series is #457 and I would call that more of an olive gray.

Battleships were different colors of gray depending on where built. Shortly before WWII the US Military standardized on a specific gray color and Henry purchased all the slightly different gray that was surplussed by the standardization. This was a lot of paint. This paint was used to paint the 9N's and likely some 2N's. So the color of the tractors had the variation that the battleships had prior to the standardization. Yes it was darker than the 8N gray. When I removed my seat spring, I found a nice patch of original color that had been protected through the years. I went to PPG and had them match the color.

Waterworth Farm: I picked up some VanSickle paint, primer and hardener at my local Orscheln"s last May, when it was on sale for a pretty good price.

I don"t know if the sale is an annual thing, but if it is, I"m planning to pick up some more this May. (I"m in west central Missouri, and it"s too dang cold to paint right now, anyway!)

Also, for what it"s worth: Orscheln"s seems to be phasing out their paint shaking machines. After trying to stir a gallon of primer that had been on the shelf for a while, I gave up and snuck it into the local Wal-Mart to get it shaken. It was Wal-Mart, so I didn"t feel too guilty. ;)
 
Ford M-2888 is the p/n and TISCO sells a Ford (9N/2N)dark Gray version, TP 2888, but it is a shade too dark. The original a9N gray had a more of a bluish tint to it. Ditzler supplied paint to Ford for one supplier. TISCO paint is made by Van Sickle Paint Mfg. Co. now located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Sometimes you can take the paint code to a reputable dealer and they can call up the recipe on the computer and mix up a batch for you. I did this back in 2003 with the DuPont Centarri Red that John Smith uses for his 8Ns. A local auto parts store that sells DuPont paint was able to mix me a batch and I have a copy of the actual ingredients with tints and mix percentages listed.
