I'm looking at this available Hydro and want to know about things to look for, and the pecularities of this model. I have never had any IH hydro, other than a combine. Thanks for any information...Darald

They are best used in light duty applications such as running a baler or handling a loader. Comparatively inefficient on fuel to non-hydro tractors under heavy load such as tillage. Cost prohibitive to repair the transmission if a serious problem arises. When the John Deere 50 series row crops came out in 1983 a lot of die hard IH guys went from the hydro to the 15 speed Power Shift and never looked back. If it were me I would look at something else unless you do not mind taking a gamble that it does not work out.

Worlds best loader tractor. fine and handy as a big mac for baling or variable speed work. Tillage is fine as long as it is not maxed out full power operation. Best tractor in many ways for big utility work. Snow blowing is an example. See archives for testing a Hydro. Jim

I would second that about not using on heavy drawbar work. They are great for PTO work. Baling, mowing, feed wagons, and bale processors are what most use them for around here. They are about the only tractor to use on a bale processor if you are bedding cattle in loose housing. I was told that it is better to use them full forward in the LO range than partways in HI if there is any measurable load on the drawbar.

Thanks for the input. This tractor would likely just be a toy, maybe the 2350 loader may end up on it, as the 986 is a terrible loader tractor, compared to the 4010. I am retired and just mess with any unusual IH's, plus the hundred series made during the mid 50's.

We bought a 1066 Hydo in 1973 brand new. We also bought a new 710 5-16 boattom plow, and a 470 17 foot disk. We run the plow at night, and the disk with harrow behind during the day. At about 700 hrs.,we melted one piston. Dealor brought a new 1086 to use while our 1066 hydro was being repaired. he asked us how we liked the exta power. We thought the 1086 was awful dead compared to our hydro. They decided to dyno the hydro. They never did tell us how many horses it had but set it back to 120. We never could plow 6+ mph after that.Only one new piston and sleeve and now has 9 thousnd + hours. No troube with hydo yet. We changed fluids and filter every two years when using heavy.

Good to hear someone actually liked a 4010 for a loader tractor. I was told it will never work since it has a dry clutch. My plan was to pull my rake and stack hay with it some.
