I"ve been looking for a classic framed IH for small work. It looks like 284 might be a neat option for a 5-6" finish mower & tiller. Would it be better to get a gas or diesel version. I"m assume 4wd would be better but they seem to harder to find.

I have a IHC 284 gas that I bought new in 79". Had motor problems and can"t find parts. Also the gas engine is very hard to locate. The engine was used only in the Mazda truck in the late seventies. The tractor is made by Komatsu.Hopefully have mine repared .I have really enjoyed using the 284 for use around our property. I have several implements for the 284 including 60 in finish mower,5ft bushhog,5ft disk, one 16 in plow, one row covington planter,5 shank chisle plow,3pt spike tooth harrow,5ft box blade, and 6ft straw rake. The 284 handles all of the imp. with no problems If you get one keep good oil in it and keep a good service on it.

CON. To my knowledge, the 284 does not have live PTO. A real disappointment for that vintage of tractor.

4WD isn't needed unless you are going to use it for snow or you plan to get stuck often. It should not be used on a continuous basis. Never used on a hard surface. Use only on slippery surface or soft dirt when needed. If you don't allow for some slippage between the front and rear wheels, it will cause stress on the drive train.
