8n electrical

I have a 50 8n side mount. when I take a voltmeter reading across the battery terminals with the engine off, I get a normal 6.2v reading. but when I try it with the engine running, the voltmeter goes crazy and I can"t get any reading. why would this be?

Electrical noise originating in gen, VR, ignition system scrambles the digital meter's brain. Get an analog meter or alternatively a much more expensive digital meter than the one you are using.

As said, analog. And a cheap analog meter works just fine,
but before you buy one check the available voltage scales.
Some have a 10V scale which works fine on a 6V system.
However if you want to use it on a 12V system and the next
scale is 250V, it's not of much use on the 12V system. BTDT
