I want to install a voltmeter in place of my broken ampmeter.Do I take both wires and put it on to + side of the gauge then ground the other?

If you do, you will have the gauge operating all the time ign. off or on. To make it operate only when the tractor is on. ground the same terminal that is grounded on your battery, and hook the other lead to the ignition switch. (assumes a battery ignition). if a mag, you could put a on off switch for the volt meter.
The wires from the charging system and to the starter switch and to the lights from the amp meter can be hooked to a common terminal, lug, or junction not grounded. (well insulated) Jim

I am working till friday. Will try then and on the voltmeter question, this is on a diesel 560.Will It be ok to do as I said?

If the meter has 150 ohms or more of resistance, it will be OK to leave it on all the time. By doing as you said. Or putting a switch to ground from the side you do not put all the wires on. It reads from hot to ground. Jim
