Here she is all cleaned up and ready to go ! Ain't she a beaut !
Picking up fel pro 7277b gasket after work
Questions do I need gasket sealant or cement?
Coolant how much and what kind?
Thanks for all the help .im getting there!
Using 30 weight oil ,five quarts. Old oil drained last night.

I have rebuilt motors with Fel Pro gaskets and used no sealer. You will need some sealer on the head bolts as they go into the water jacket. If your engine has studs and you did not remove them you can forget about that. Use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze. Takes about 12 quarts, but since you did not drain the block, it will take less.

just get you a gallon of the green coolant.. no gasket cement needed.

premix the coolant IMHO.

lastly.

I'd use something other than 30w oil personally. like 15w40.. etc...

Yep, looks good.

Re oil, check out tip # 6.

Spark plugs, tip # 7.

Coolant, as others have said, 50/50 anti-freze & distilled water. see tips 24 & 25. Will take a total of about 10-11 qts.

Make sure you torque the head bolts in the proper sequence per figure FO26 in the I&T FO4 manual.

Do it in 3 steps; do all of the bolts to 25 lbs in the correct order. Then start over & go to 50 lbs. On your final sequence, go to 65 lbs.

After it's all back together & leak free, run the engine to operating temp. Turn it off & let it cool down. Then, re-check the torque.

PS........

You had anti-freeze in the oil, so need to change the filter. And when you do, it will take 6 quarts of oil.

Ok . Tractor mechanic returned my call last night and remembered my tractor -- I told him what I was doing - he told me MY Tractor has no oil filter! Glad he told me coz I would go crazy looking for it!
15w40 ? Best bet ?

Yea, 15w40 will work fine.

No oil filter? That's very unusual.

Look at the picture. The canister w/ the 'warning' label holds the oil filter. Are you sure one isn't on the tractor?

Im a bit late on your post just so I get it correct as I talked you into a shade tree mechanic. Are you sure there is no oil filter? See photo from Bruce, your tractor is a Ford N right? 1010 NAPA oil filter. You know it is not a screw on one like your car or truck? You did remove all the green liquid in the cylinders? Clean mating surfaces where the head sits on block? DO you have a manual that shows tighting order of head bolts? If not let us know. Stop if you have a doubt on your repair. A lot depends on your head repair. Do as you want but I am a fan of copper spray gasket seal and silicones. For me it is just a way for me to avoid a problem , but that's me do what you want. A lot of guys get by fine without it. I also throw in some builders block into the cooling system to avoid leaks. Have fun.

Simple answer- FIND a Mechanic--you don"t have one if he don"t know your tractor has a filter.......

If you use sealant at all, I would use the spray copper coat.
I don't find it necessary with the FelPro gaskets.

Since your plug was seized, I would use a very small amount of
antiseize on the new ones. Don't get it on the tip or first thread.

I also question the oil filter comment. The original looks like Bruce
posted. If it's not there, were are the lines running to if at all?

Once you get the broken plug out, you can chase the plug threads to clean them up before installing the head. The spark plug thread size is METRIC -14mm x 1.25 pitch. Don"t try to use anything else as you"ll booger up the threads and be in real deep doo-doo. Any good machine shop/mechanic should have a 14mm x 1.25mm tap to chase the threads. Now is the best time to do this as once the head is mounted, you won"t want to tap the holes as the chips/debris will fall down into the pistons. Also, anytime you need to pull the plugs, first use compressed air to blow off the head and blow out the plug wells real good so debris doesn"t fall into the engine once the plug is removed.

If you have no oil filter it probably has been by passed. I have a 9N that was done that way. You need to watch Ebay or some where and find one.

I checked . No oil filter . Tractor has been running great do need an oil filter ? I know most have them but will it make a difference in performance ? Thanks

Does your lawn mower have an oil filter? Does your car have an oil filter? Etc, etc, etc

I wouldn't say its "required", but if you want it to last....get the right housing and filter. Then hook it up correctly.

Ok maybe I phrased it wrong I should have said " I can't
believe the mechanic that fixed the tractor the last three times
didn't suggest I get an an oil filter on it " I'm glad it has been
running so well with out it . Now when I get it running I'll
proceed with getting an oil filter installed. Thank you and yes
all those engines have an oil filter . As an inexperienced
newby I was actually looking for an answer more like - your
motor will still run but to enhance the life of the engine a oil
filter is a great help. Thanks for tolerating my stupid questions .

I apologize for the way my response was phrase; not a good day here.

Yes it will run without one. The filter will [i:e62adc104f]filter[/i:e62adc104f] out all the gunk and impurities that get into your oil. It will prolong bearing life and make your engine last long.

It won't be that hard to find a housing and get it plumbed right. Keep asking questions!!!!

Drained radiator plug on bottom. I'm guessing that's how I get all that out of the block. Oil drained also. The two holes about the size of a quarter still have green coolant in them does that stay or am I missing something . I sucked out fluid in cap screw holes. Scraped down and shop vaced block. The real big hols look a little rough on the bottoms . Here's a photo let me know if I'm ready to proceed. Thanks. A little worried about the fluid in the hols.

Looks pretty good to me. You're definitely on the right track.

I cleaned up your pic below just for some reference.

Clean the block and head like you were prepping for surgery. Then go in with the new gasket. Keep up the good work.

It supposed to be there. That is the water jacket. The head will have corresponding holes.

Coolant will flow through the block, up into the head, and back into the radiator.

There should be a plug or petcock on the block around the starter if you want to drain the block.

Started!!
Lots of white smoke drove it out of the barn ran for a couple of
minutes still smoke then stalled won't start agin
