Weak starter??

Cub 6v starter spins freely off the tractor.

On the tractor - with solid ground and fully charged battery - starter turns engine, but very slowly.

Does this makes sense?

Do I need a $90 starter rebuild? I believe this is what the man charges.

Best way to know for sure is take it in and have it checked. Most parts places with test them for free

Sounds like one or both bushings are worn, letting the armeture drag on the fields.

How old are the battery cables? I replaced one on one of my Hs which solved the problem. I stripped the insulation off the old one. Totally rusted out.

Cables are heavy duty and ends have been cleaned, with good clean ground on battery.

Have also used almost new heavy duty jumper cables from battery direct to starter.

Same thing happened on my H, replaced the starter brushes and just like new!

Looking at the outside of the armature for scoring and places in the field poles where the armature has rubbed is definitive of a dragging motor. The bushings, brushes, and a new drive pinion, and possible turning of the commutator if it is grooved. Go for it. Jim

How is the switch on the starter then new ground cable. Then a new cable going to the starter. Then new brushes in the starter and clean the commutator and a new bushing and bearing. Remember the starter is a left hand rotation as the bendix is toward the driver and not forward as other tractors. Just because the batt ends are clean doesent mean they are good.

Shop says starter in fine shape. Probably need new 00 cable he says.

Back to the cabling.

$7.99 per foot at NAPA for 00; then the ends. Wow!

Someone on net builds new ones for $55 or so. Claims proper cable size but does not state 00. Wondering........

Check at your local welding equipment place I bet you can buy welding cable cheaper then that by the foot and it makes great battery cables

shouldn"t need 00 on a cub 1ga should be fine it"s a very small . engine I have 1 Ga. on both cubs and they work well check for cororsion or cracks in cable.

A load test of the battery and a few simple tests with a volt meter would soon show where the problem is.

If the battery loads test passes then look for voltage drop all along the circuit from one battery post all the way back to the other. Look for no more than .1 volt drop across any connection and no more than .2 volt drop across any switch. If you have more than about 1.5 volt drop across the starter when it is engaged you either have a starter problem or the engine is not turning over freely.

Man made me a nice cable using 1/0 welding cable. Solved problem. Engine turns fine.
