8N steering gear repair instructions

Where can I find the best instructions for repairing the steering gear on an 8N with the later style steering gear?

Top bearing in the "box" is gone. One at steering wheel needs to be replaced too.

Can I replace those two bearings without taking worm, etc, out of the box? I know, pieces went somewhere down in there. Can they be fished?

The I&T FO-4 manual ought to cover the rebuild. You will need to completely disassemble the box to make the repairs and get the loose balls out.
 
I just replaced the bearings in mine, the upper bearing had rusted and fell apart. I used the link below. I"m not sure if I"m supposed to link to another site or not, but that is what I used and it was enough info to walk me through it. If the link doesn't work just google "8n steering box rebuild" and it will come up near the top.

Hey roger.

I did one not long ago. To get all the debris out of the box you really should disassemble it.

There is a plug under the bottom bearing that you drive which gives access to the bottom bearing race. You can get a new plug at auto parts for couple bucks or so.

I just used the fo-4 manual and it wasn't really difficult. took more time to paint it than to rebuild it.

fo-4 manual tells you how to retime sectors no fail easy.

IF you could use a telescoping magnet and fish ALL rolers and cage parts out I guess you could just drop in a new top thrust bearing.. and replace the busing int he top of the column.. adjust shim stack.. and then reset backlash

themmanual boxes are easy as pie
