BD 220 in a 460

Alright wise ones, I finally am up against a wall. been watching these forums for years, now I need help. Bought a fencerow 460 gas that was yelling at me for years. Block shot. Subsequently bought a 303 for the engine to repower previous tractor. learned hard way about difference between C-221 and BD 220. Anyone ever adapted a BD 220 into a 460, or do I have a good truck engine for sale? Also need a set of 38 rims and tires for this critter, assuming my wife doesn't make me eat it. Thanks

IMHO you've got a good used truck engine for sale.

As for the tires and rims, it's every man for himself these days. New ones are off the charts price wise, so what few good used tires come along don't last long on the open market. Just keep your eyes peeled, and a stack of $100's in your wallet.

Oh man Yeah. They are out there. Luckily I drive the route from Home and Camp to Fort Wood quite a bit. I'm like a kid in a candy store goin by all the old farms, if you can catch the owner home. Thats the problem, but I do get rid of those pesky 100's pretty quick usually.

I got more than a few old timers tellin me that BD 220 ought to bolt in. havent actually hoisted it up there yet, but I am not hopeful. Gonna have to be a lot more caught up to engage in "experimentation".

The BD 220 will bolt in on the back, just need to use a few nuts and longer bolts since the rear mounting bolt holes are not threaded like a tractor engine.

The problem is going to be that you will need to use the front cover off the tractor engine and that will not fit too well on the BD220. The BD220 engine uses 5/16" bolts while the C221 uses 3/8" bolts. Larger problems are that the governors are different and you have a hydraulic pump mounted on the other side of the engine. You can't just swap the governors since the timing gears are different and you can't swap them between the two engines since the center line dimensions between the camshaft and crankshaft are different between the two engines.

If you want to try to make the front cover that is on the combine engine work in the tractor and them come up with some usable linkage for the governor you could probably make the BD220 work in the tractor.
