Rebuilding H Water Pump - Questions...

I'm making progress on re-building the water pump on my '52 H. I've got it mostly apart, but want to know if I need to take it further. Do I need to take the long "shaft" out of the main housing like it is shown in the parts catalog? If so, how do you do that (mine doesn't want to budge)? Also any tips on how to get the pulley flanges to spin apart? I'd like to take it as far apart as possible and then clean everything up before I put it back together.

no reason to take it apart farther, odds are you will break the pulley halves in the process.

how are the bearings? Replace as needed while you have it apart.

I would not take it apart any further. Clean it up with solvent, and paint remover, then look carefully for wear grooves that would prevent seals from working. The flange that is adjustable should spin off. if not heat it with a propane torch and cool it then heat and cool. Driving it around with a brass drift tight then loose then tight till it begins to move will work. I like PB blaster, ATF also works. Wire brushing befor attempts at movement will assure it has clean threads to move into. Jim

The threaded pulley does not come off on an H like
it does on an M. What you need to do is get it
loose on the threads so it can go to the end of
it's movement in and out. If you would need to get
it off, you would first have to remove the pin
from rear pulley that is in outer edge of flange
by driving it through to the inside and then press
that rear pulley off. Far as the center shaft,
you don't need that out. However, IH did not
offer the brass bushings seperatly on the H either
like they do on the M. If they were worn , then
you pressed out that center and replaced it with a
new one. I have found bushings that do work, but
you need a flanged one on the inside end for
impeller to run against.
