8N Hydraulic oil question

Would universal hydraulic oil work in a 8N without doing any damage? it is used mostly to push snow, plow & disk a small garden and to run a small brush hog to trim around fences. Want to get away from the slow hydraulics in the winter.

Yellow metal safe Universal Tractor Fluid is fine as long as it meets
or exceeds Ford spec M2C134D. Most do, and it will say so on the label.
You can find it at TSC, Wal-Mart, etc.
It is thinner, so you may notice more leaks.

IMHO, the "yellow metal safe" issue applies to GEAR OIL, usually GL-5.

IMHO the concern over EP corrosivness in an N series is way over blown. There are no synchronizers which are the most vulnerable type of component and what little yellow metal is there (PTO cam blocks) doesn't get anywhere close to the surface pressures and temperatures that activate the EP additives. In any event with a few exceptions most modern GL-5 formulations are buffered and not particulalrly corrosive. Here is a list of [u:a81251afd4]ASTM D130[/u:a81251afd4] copper strip corrosion test results for some common gear lubes. Test results range from 1A (non-corrosive) to 4C (highly corrosive). Most of these lubes are 1B which is just a light stain - e.g. yellow metal safe in most synchronized transmissions and certainly OK in an N-series
