Just got back from Hawaii - visited pearl harbor for the first time - very interesting. Was strange to see all the Japanese tourists walking around taking pictures - wondered what the old ones thought of it - asked a guide and he said on the whole they did not show much emotion - however, what did cause a lot of interest was the photos and information about the Kamakazi pilot who attacked the ship - the fact that they gave his remains a proper burial with respect really affected them.

did you know that Pearl harbor got its name because a lot of oysters were harvested there and many pearls collected? many years later due to silting and pollution no more oysters and according to a museum we visited no major museum in the world has one example of a Hawaiian pearl from Pearl harbor.

I don't know why but I did not recall that the 'mighty mo' was sent to the gulf during desert storm and launched a number of cruise missiles and bombarded the coast with its huge 16 inch guns to provide a diversion whilst the troops moved in from another location.
 
The New Jersey did most of the Gulf activities along with the
Wisconsin. I think the Missouri was held back because of its
historical significance and not wanting to chance losing it. An act
of Congress in 2006 provides for a recall of the battleships to
service so alteration is allowed to change that. Something like this should be posted under Tractor Talk since it unofficially carries the OT subjects and most people look for the OT topics there.
 
Great Pic...TY for the post...Pearl is at the top of my bucket list! I have often felt that with all the entitlement programs we have in the US, the Gov"t. should have some sort of program where any US vet can procure his own travel to a regionally designated airport in the US and then get a Gov"t paid (notice I didn"t say free because it"s already been more than earned if they are a vet!) trip to Pearl! I don"t mean a vacation on the beaches, I mean be flown in, transported to the base, put up in transient housing on base and flown back the next day!
As far as OT posts...here or anywhere...a post like this is so significant and historical it should be allowed anywhere without someone biot**ing! I mean some of the stuff that goes for posts and someone is complaining about this? Unamerican!
We even have a whole page that has been ruined by "UpandAdam" posts and guys trying to type like Boomhauer talks on King of the Hill, and someone complains about this?

Lee, glad you had a good trip and learned some new things!

Joan and I love to visit new places and we frequent museums.
They're generally inexpensive. Definitely interesting and very informative.

You can post U.S. history/wartime memorial posts anytime you
want as far as I'm concerned. Least we forget!
 
LOL I hear ya Royse...just got flabbergasted that of all the ridiculousness that goes on these boards sometimes, someone would complain about this one!
Have ya been to the Smithsonian? I could become a missing person left to my own devices...I mean I could disappear in there for days!
 

Thank you, I posted it because...now, don't want to kick the hornets nest a second time here.....I thought that possibly some of the members here were old enough to have some parents/friends who were involved in the war (I still see some vets with Pearl harbor caps now and then) - Unfortunately we ran out of time to visit the air museum there - BTW its expensive - to visit more than one of the exhibits was nearly $40 which adds up for a family of 4. Will try to limit OT posts but sometimes just get excited and want to share something with others here.

As far as I'm concerned you can post things like this anytime.
I toured the USS Alabama BB-60 one time.
They are truely impressive machines.
One thing I remember most about it is going into the bridge. It's 15" thick of armoured steel. Like walking into a huge, impenatrable safe.

NY 986 is right. Tractor talk is mostly OT topics anymore. Like a bunch of folks sitting at the coffee shop discussing whatever happens to be the flavor of the day.
If you don't follow that board you miss out on a lot of interesting things that don't get talked about on the brand specific boards.

Wife and I went to Kaua'i back in April for our 25th, and took the day tour to Pearl. As Dad was a submariner in Korea, we spent a long time in the Bowfin. Particularly enjoyed the Arizona memorial and then the tour of the Missouri - got a great photo of the plaque in the deck where the Instruments of Surrender were signed with the Arizona in the background. Bookends of WWII.

The air museum was good, too. Google "Swamp Ghost," and read up about the B-17 bomber that went down in New Guinea - it was recovered a few years ago and had just been delivered to the air museum two weeks before we got there. Incredible.

Had a great time, and I told Beth I can't wait to go back for our 50th! :p

Expensive? Yes, it adds up, I'll give you that.
Maybe you can get XYZ done on the next trip.
How expensive will it be to do it over again?
Will you ever be able to do it over again?
Not with the kids at that age.
Some things are worth their weight in gold! :)
 
As stated, I hope you and anyone else feels free to post one like this ANYWHERE on this site! It used to be that Tractor Talk was mostly just that...tractor talk, sometimes not so brand specific, but still tractor talk, and the Tales forum was for the guys talking about "stuff", but Tales has really been taken over, just a bunch of guys tellin" ya every move they make during the day, each time they scratch their azz, trying to sound like a bunch of people that should have been in the movie "wrong Turn", limited amount of people, but lots of nothing posts...kinda like the Facebook of YT...I guess if they are enjoying themselves...but sometimes when the attention of thier limited group is not enough they jump back to Tractor Talk to let us all know how many squares of paper they used for their last visit to the Hopper!
That having been said, I actually went down there yesterday for the first time in months...worth the trip to see James Howell"s video! Pete
 
Does anyone else here Remember Pearl Harbor? I remember hearing about it on the radio when it happened. Had to ask my Parents "where's Pearl Harbor?" I was 9.
 
thanks for your post i had 2 grandfathers in wars ww2 korea . i cant believe some would comeplan about this post. life is not just about tractors ,trucks, motor cycles , stuf. but great men and woman . some times you guys speeak in tongue or slang hard to follow maybe iam a little slow.
