1953 Farmall Super H


I have a whine in transmission. All new bearings on driving shaft, sliding gear shaft and countershaft. Has been investigated enough to know it is not ring and pinion causing whine. Gear mesh and backlash on ring and pinion are set to existing specs. I suspect the constant mesh gear because all gears including reverse are noisy except fifth gear which of course is straight through. I know that changing bearings "tightens" things up and may cause different wear patterns. My question is do any of you with a SH have any problems with the constant mesh gear being noisy?

They do make some whine. Straight cut gears cannot be made noiseless, or they would be used in thousands of additional applications. Helical gears are far more quiet, but have slightly reduced strength, and dramatic thrust loading. Since you have refit the bearings, your choices are three: ignore it, Replace the constant mesh gears, or try to quiet it somewhat with 85 120 wt gear oil. I use synthetic 85 120 in several transmissions with 30% reduction in noise. Jim
 
Well If you changed the set on the ring and pinion to take up ware then you have found your problem . The set spec.'s are FOR NEW GEARS not ones that have gotten antiquated with each other over the years.
 
With respect, the noise is absent in High gear. I would think the noise frequency/pitch would go up, but not be absent. If the pitch is the same in all gears at the same engine speed (possibly different loudness)that constant mesh seems a high probability. Jim
 
Maybe , but tomany times guys think that oh wait a min. this ring gear needs to be tightened up and they start messen with pinion depth and resetting back lash on and old gearset . And you end up with a noisy ring and pinion . always check the old back lash first and with heavy grease check where the pinion sets in the ring gear for a pattern when you start changing bearings and keep all th3e org. shims on the same side as they came from. Just because the book says .009 -.0012-14 is what it should be NEW this is not going to be the case with OLD on new bearings . so if it had .025 on back lash on the OLD and on the new it ends up at .018 leave the back lash alone .and check the pinion pattern with heavy grease if ya don't have a red or white lead . Don't ask how i how this.
 
I have to correct you on helical gears having reduced strength. These (helical) gears are stronger because they have more than one tooth in contact with the other gear at all times.
