IH 460 stuck between gears

My IH 460 utility is stuck between two gears. I removed the shifter an noticed that the end of the shifter is badly worn. When sitting on the seat, I can see that the 3 channels that should be aligned when in neutral, are positioned as follows: the channel on the left moves freely, the one in the center is stuck about 1/2" back from the neutral position, and the one on the right is stuck about 1/2" forward of the neutral channel. I have tried to pry them so that they will align with each other but they won"t move. Any suggestions as to how I can get them to line up? How much pressure is safe to apply when trying to pry them to where they have to be for neutral.

You're on the right track, but you'll need to jack up one of your rear wheels so that it will rotate freely. Be sure to block your front wheels, fore and aft, for safety. Also, depress your clutch pedal a time or two. You shouldn't have to apply much pressure to align the shifting rails...the problem, I'm guessing, is that it's either on an incline or your clutch pedal needs depressing to relieve the pressure. It happens occasionally on my 450. Good luck.

I got one that will do that. try to rock the tractor then put your bar in there to pop it back. somtimes you need to have someone apply pressure when the tractor is getting rocked.

Jack up a rear wheel. That should take the pressure off the gears. You can apply quite a bit of pressure...If that doesn't work, you may have to pull the top.

As a matter of fact, the tractor is on a slight uphill grade as it sets there. I'm going to try all the suggestions that I have received from you folks and I'll get back with the results.
Thanks

Yup, it's bound up because the weight of the tractor is against the gears.

You may need to get another tractor, hook on with a chain, and put some tension on the chain to relieve the pressure.

when our 560 gets stuck like that we take the gear shift off and use a big screw driver or pry bar and realign the rails. works great!

Well, I tried prying, rocking, and jacking the tractor to get those shift rails to align but no luck. Finally decided that if I pry too hard on those somewhat worn parts, they will break and I'll have to remove the top. So I'm in the process of removing the top. I would suppose that I'd better remove those ball bearings below the shifter springs before I remove the top or they'll fall inside. Although I was really hoping to avoid removing the top, there are some other repairs that I can do while I have the tractor apart...looking for that silver lining.

Thanks to all the forum members that lended their knowledge so that I could get my 460 gears unstuck. I tried all the suggestions but what finally worked for me was removing the top of the transmission and using a 1"x4"x2' board with one end placed near the center of the gear and then striking the other end with a large hammer. It took about 3 good blows before it released. Thanks again, you folks are the best!!!
