lead in gas

I heard ( I can't remember where) That lead was not added to gas until after WW2. If that is true a lot of old engines were actually not made for leaded gas. Ellis

1920s i believe. Ethyle gas was advertized on very old gas puimps predating WWII. Jim

Dad told me they charged extra to put lead in gas, and years later they charged extra to leave it out. Dad owned his own garage after WWII till the late 60s.

It was about the same time battery ignition became popular in cars and trucks.

If I remember history correctly Tetra-Methyl-Lead was developed prior to WWII for aircraft fuel by the U.S. The desire was to produce higher compression aircraft engines for higher performance. The Germans in fact worried that the Allies had gasoline with lead antiknock compounds and they (the Germans) did not. Given that the Germans did not have leaded gasoline it must not have been widely available prior to the war. Antiknock compounds were not required as long as the compression ratio was held low enough. It was the mid 1950's before compression ratios in autos begin to rise to the level needing leaded gasoline.
