Tire Size SH

I need 2 rear tires for my latest SH. It has 12.4-38" Good Years on rear. My other SH has 13.6-38" stating on 12" rim.
Which size will I find best deals on and where can I check on line?
thanks

12.4's are big enough for a SH. The 12 inch "stated rim" on the tire is likely 11 inch -- IH approved of tires 1 inch narrower than the tread width, which on a 13.6 is 12 inches, 11 inches for a 12.4. 13.6 tires fit noticeably better on a 12 inch rim. If you go online and find American made tires the shipping wil cancel any price advantage. Bite the bullet and get them from a local dealer.

My SH had 12.4 on it.When they "went south",I mounted a set of 11.2-big mistake!those little tires look like crap, they tend to spin easily.I will go back to the 12.4 size.IMHO,13.6 is too big a tire for a H/SH.Buy from a local dealer, buy the time you pay shipping, you will pay MORE than if you had bought local!Besides,He's your neighbor-he has to eat, too.

May want to look at other tractors or pictures to see what you like the looks of. Even the same size tires from different manufactures can look a lot different on the tractor. Think the largest number of later SH tractors were equiped with 10 inch rims with 11 being the widest IH originaly equiped them with unless something special. Some older 12.4 tires look as wide or wider at the tread than some newer 13.6 do.

This is really true. When I bought my Super H, it had mismatched 12.4 x 38`s on it. One was a Firestone Field & Road, the other a CO-OP long bar/short bar (Goodyear made ?). The Firestone was noticeably smaller in diameter and width than the CO-OP. The tractor didn`t sit level, it leaned down on the Firestone side. I lucked out this past spring and found a nearly new, matching CO-OP with the nubs on it yet at a local salvage yard for $200. Other than the fact I don`t really care for the looks of the long/short bar tire, I think the 12.4 X38 size is all the bigger I would want, the 13.6 is a lttle too much tire for a Super H in my opinion. I don`t think you`ll find a big difference in cost between the 2 sizes (12.4 probably a little cheaper)and get them from your local dealer.

I had 11.2's on 10" rims and went to 12.4X38" tires on those same rims. I would have gone to 13.6's but couldn't justify looking for 12" rims.

All the advice I was given by my local tire guy and what I have read on here says you can 2" bigger tire size that what your rim is.

I've seen some 13.6's on 10" rims and they looked a little big but seemed to work.

I bought a pair of 15.5X38" on 10" rims and that looked like crap and the tread was dome shaped instead of being flat. I put those tires on a set of 14" rims and it looks perfect on my 300.

1st pic is 54SH with 11.2X38's on 10" rims.
2nd pic is 53SH with 12.4X38" on 10" rims
The 11.2's look a little wimpy. Go with the 12.4's

A couple of nice Super H`s there,Dean.

Also it could have had a 4 ply on one side and a 6 ply on the other. There is a significant difference in diameter.

The CO-OP, which was the bigger of the 2 tires , is a 4 ply. Don`t remember what the Firestone was, I sold it the week after I found the matching CO-OP. Wouldn`t the 6 ply be the bigger diameter tire, though ? Certainly wasn`t the case with the Firestone even if it was a 6 ply, it was the smaller of the 2. I just think certain brands run bigger than others.

I accidently ordered a 6 ply Goodyear or Firestone (can't remember which) tire for a IH 444 a few years back, identical otherwise to the 4 ply on the other wheel. It leans toward the 4 ply. IMO some of the oddball brands (probably should not include CO-OP in that but--) did not have the same specifications, although they were supposed to.

x2 on shop locally. Fuel costs have sent shipping rates skyrocketing. If you're shipping anything bigger than a baseball card, you're gonna pay for it.

Unless you are planning a road trip that passes near the online tire dealer anyway, or can manage to work out some other rare deal, any savings by shopping online will disappear as soon as you pay the freight company.

Plus, if you don't plan on installing them yourself, you may find that the local tire dealer will either refuse to install them for you, or charge you a premium price. They're protecting their business, something our country should be doing more of.

Out of curiosity on some firestone on one tractor I checked a couple today. Firestone 14.9 X 38 field and road that I thought looked a smaller diameter than a 15.5 X 38 armstrong on another tractor even though there not supposed to be. Found they were the same diameter but the 15.5 measured more from the floor to the center of the axle. Could be because the 15.5 had a little less weight on it.
15.5 was on 14 inch rims and the other 12 inch that may effect the measurements. Also the 14.9 maybe worn a little more, but not much.
