I have some 8N Generator questions....Epilogue

Guys,

Bob Purington,
The Old Hokie,
JMOR,
JCinKY,
and Soundguy!

You Guys did it!! The 8N 6 volt generator is now charging!

Thanks to all you for building up my knowledge level to be able to fix it.

Took me a while to find the time to get to it today.
Cranked up the engine and let it warm a bit.
I jumped the GROUND and FIELD to each other on the left side.
Then I took a screwdriver and touched the yellow and red terminals on the voltage regulator on the right side.
I heard a snap and saw a spark, pulled the screwdriver away and checked the ammeter.
It was pegged way over to the + side. I ran back over to the left side and pulled the GROUND to FIELD jumper.
The ammeter came back nearer to center but was right of center indicating a charge.

Thank you! I appreciate your knowledge sharing and your patience.

hanks for the complimentary words, Larry, but................that was really just a test to see if generator would generate. Hope it holds for you, but it may indicate that VR is on 'iffy' ground.

OK, Will keep an eye on it. Started it this morning and it fired right up. The ammeter is definitely showing a positive charge, still.

Question: I polarized the generator, correct?

I have read that a person should polarize the generator every time they remove/change battery and or the generator. I had the battery out for charging previously a few weeks ago, (I was doing some other maintenance and it was in the way).

Nonetheless, I will keep an eye on it.

Thank you Gentlemen!

Larry Wallace

jumping bat to arm during our motor test polarized the genny.

you don't have to polarize every time the bat is out. though if the bat is out or dead for extended long periods of unuse.. say.. the machine setup for 5ys. poalrize it.

at shutdown every day, the battery is disconnected from the gen.

also.. if you remove the gen for work.. polarize it.

dropping the gen or replacing the field pieces will constitute a need for repolarization.

also.. if you choose to change polarity.. repolarize it.

no need to repol to change battery, wireing or regulator

Glad to hear it Larry.

As JMOR pointed out and Soundguy told me, any other issues may reside in the VREG. My issue was a poorly grounded regulator causing intermittent charging.

Just something to keep in mind if she drops out on you again. Everything electrical needs to be bright and tight!

Good luck and good job.

Started it two more times this afternoon and it"s working like it should. One by-product to this is that the starter solenoid is working much better than it was. It was giving me fits trying to get it started. I guess the battery was that low.

Odds are good that this generator has not been polarized for who knows how long. I bought this machine in March but just this month have I been trying to get it useable for mowing. Earlier I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket and a mount stud. No wires made that task easier for my pea brain.

The governor is probably the next item on the list. It does not pass the tests described in 75 Tips.

Until then,

Thanks again to all of you.

Larry Wallace.
