Starter Issue on 8N

I am having a problem getting my 8n started this spring. Was stored this winter and I would start it monthly and let it run for a bit. The last time it was colder than usual and when I depressed the starter switch it crank once and the switch acted like it stuck. Now when I depress the switch nothing happens. The battery is good and charged. I tried by passing the switch with a jumper cable but only can get a single click every so often. Is my starter stuck against the fly wheel or is this a selinoid or electrical issue?

If you're sure your battery is strong, I'd take the cables off and make sure they are clean and then reattach and really snug them tight. Then, if the same thing happens, tap on the solenoid when you turn the key and see if it engages. Have to say I had that and it was low battery. Make sure all your electrical connections are clean, and shiny. Sand them if you have to. I had it where mine would buzz by the starter. It was just low battery.
 
You say you by pasted the switch with a jumps as in across the to big terminals on the solenoid or some place else??? Try reaching in and see if you can move the cranks shaft by grabbing the fan and turning it. Or if you have a hand crank try it but most people do not have a hand crank. Also check and clean the battery terminals and make sure all connections are clean tight and bright
 
I tested my battery was reading 12.4 volts. I will try turning it over am thinking my starter engaged but did not retract when I tried starting this winter.

If your tractor didn't start the last time you tried, the starter drive is probably still engaged in the flywheel. That said, it has nothing to do with your problem, these starters will turn no matter what position the drive is in.. The bendix will never retract until the flywheel spins fast enough to make it retract. 12.4v is pretty good level of charge so try the following. Keep your volt meter hooked up to the battery and hit the start button. If it drops below 9v your battery is no good. If it doesn't drop you likely have a bad connection. And as the others have said, shiny and tight connections. HTH Good luck
 
Can not totally agree with you on they will spin no matter what. I have seen more then one that the bendex would hang in such a way to lock up the starter and the engine and if that happens it will do just as his is doing. BTDT and have had to fix that more then once by loosing up the starter and then tightening it back down
 
I guess a better way to say it would be, the starter will always attempt to spin no matter where the drive is positioned. As far as the starter locking everything up, I don't remember seeing that on one of these, the amount of torque they produce would generally break something before they would seize everything up, especially when run on 12v. Learn sumthin new every day.
 
Another possibility is that your starter needs to have good contact to the tractor frame. If you took the starter out, and buffed the metal that touches the frame, and the frame, that could help if its a grounding issue.

You can string flashlight batteries together and get 12.4 volts. Will that start your tractor?

Charge the battery & then check it correctly with a hydrometer or load test it.

The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

Do not consider any other causes of the problem until you complete all 4 steps above.

If you study the starter you see that the current flows thru the starter bolts.You have 3 die cast to steel and iron joints.Not the best conductors.You could prove it with voltage drop tests if there was a problem.
