Hi guys,
Last year I did the motor and replaced the hydraulic lift cylinder in my 51 8n.
Every thing went ok, except the after market cylinder had to be ground down to fit.
(Another story for a deferent day)
Last week my father was plowing snow when the lift would not stay up with the clutch in?
This happened all at once, up to then the lift was holding well. We do not use the tractor that much, so I thought it was odd that it started doing this?
I was wondering if maybe the pressure relieve valve could be the problem?
Any thoughts?
 
Could be the PR valve--I fixed two severalyrs ago that acted just like yours--and it was the PR valve--Pull side cover, lift something-look in to see if you see oil streaming from above, around mouth of cylinder, or toward front right of cover..If not, look for turbulence in the oil down deep....If leaking fast you can lift an implement, turn off the PTO, put your finger over the end of the PR valve and you can feel it trying to push ur finger off..other way to check--take 1/2" ID clear tubing-slip it on end of PR valve..operate lift--oil should not fill the tube..HTH
 
Thanks, I was thinking the same things.
Just seemed odd that it happened all at once.
If it was the Cylinder it would have been a gradual thing.
I will check it out!
 
The other possible causes are gasket failure at any pressure port (several locations are suspect and failure can be found through the inspection port while lifting an implement); or rupture of the thin-wall tube that goes up the inside of the differential housing taking pressurized oil from pump to lift cylinder (also found same way).
 
Pull the right side inspection plate off and see if a stream of oil is coming down from above.

Also check the pressure relief valve.
