Late 8N rear hub

Late 8N with worn rear hubs. Has any one had any luck with trying to put shims on axel to try to tighten up hub. Or remove metal from back of hub so when you tighten the axle nut hub won't rub on bearing cage.

ave or Zane or both maybe, I think, has talked of using strips cut from hard banding strap material. I just get a new hub & axle when needed. It is most likely the back of the lug studs hitting, since they are rear most parts, so I'm not sure what material you would remove? If hub &/or axle are worn that much, then you run into situation where nut/washer tightens against axle shoulder & hub remains loose on splines. New hub & perhaps new axle to fix.
 

I tried it one time on one of my N's (Zane's banding strip trick).. Its been used 60 hr's and no issues... Hubs on a 8N are a P>O>S> to start off with... I have no problem with this on my own but would never do it on a customers tractor...
 
I have always wondered why there isn't someone somewhere who has come up with a fix, well, fix might not be the right word, but an "improve".

Maybe like having the axle plated, or something like the shims mentioned. They knurl and peen to raise some metal. Along that line one might think peen with a punch, but the metal might be too hard, many variables. You'd have to be lucky or pure of thought.

How about drill and tap across the hub into the splined section. Then after assembly using a bolt as a plunger to force epoxy or JB weld into the joint. Like the song says, "nothin from nothin leaves nothin".
 
Yeah, I think it would be tough to get apart if you epoxied it together. Better be careful when listening to me.
