2n wiring trouble

I just converted my Ford 2N to 12 Volt using the Tisco 12V Conversion kit. I removed all old wiring and started new, following the diagram. Tractor started right up, runs good. Problem: My ammeter shows -30 when running, why? Also, I connected my lights to the bottom post of the resistor assy, but the lights don"t come on (they worked fine on my 6 volt system, and yes I changed all lights to 12 v bulbs). Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike
 
Just a guess, the original system was positive ground. The new 12v system is negative ground.

Run the wire through the back of the ammeter going in the opposite direction and it should show positive volts.

On a side note, the ammeters on both my 8N's are full of condensation and always show "0". The tractors don't seem to mind :)

nless you show us the specific diagram that you wired to, then even a guess on our part will be a WILD guess. :roll:

As has been said you can interchange the wires on the ammeter and it will read +30. However it should decay to 0 amps when the battery is charged up. I would make sure that the voltage on the battery falls between 13.8 volts and 14.5 volts when running. No more no less. A sustained 30 amps may indicate overcharging if your battery voltage exceeds 14.5 volts. The 30 amps could indicate a large electrical load as well.

nless they had changed, I thought that was how TISCO did their kits. It reads only alternator output (includes what is going into battery & what is consumed by loads), i.e., not simply net battery charging/discharging current. Therefore, since it is reading negative, that most likely means that ammeter terminals need reversing or if a loop style meter, run the wire through the loop in the opposite direction. The other possibility is that it reads negative all the time , engine running or not & in that case alternator is bad.
