Rusty gas tank

So while the 51 is at the machine shop we got the 49 6v pulled over to the shop, got the hood off and repaced the dizzy cover as it was broken, cleaned and set the points, new spark plugs as it had gapless plugs for some reason, checked oil and coolant (which will be changed) rigged up a gas tank from a lawnmower and she fired right up and sounded great. Now this tractor had been sitting for 15 years, thank god no rebuild on this one. So here is my question, i took the gas tank off cause i knew it was dirty inside, Had probably half a gallon of gas (varnish) inside. Bottom has varnish but the sides have a light coating of rust, how do i clean it? I already took the bowl assembly off to be replaced. I don't plan on lining the tank after cleaning, just clean her up, rewire, tap out some dents and throw a for sale sign on it! Would toilet bowl cleaner work? Thanks!!
 
Jack a back wheel up, put a pound of aquarium gravel in tank, strap it on the wheel with rubber straps, run it an hour or so. You'll be back to bright metal. (take the valve off before, and flush good with alcohol and then gasoline afterwards)
 
You might ask your local radiator repair shop. They might clean it for you. Maybe even coat the inside if it needs it.

How is the rebuild coming along?

If you are not going to line it, don't waste your time cleaning it other than getting the loose stuff out. the gravel trick will work good, I used nuts and bolts. You can use an acid but unless you line it it will just rust again real quick. I checked at a radiator shop for cleaning and lining and it was cheaper to buy a new tank.
 
Just got the everything to the machine shop Saturday, he said he'd give me a call early this week to let me know what i need to order. Tough finding someone around here willing and able to do the machine work.
 
Sounds like progress Lisa. I had the same problem with my 50 8N. No machine shops in the area anymore. Most of what I did find catered to racing. They laughed when I said flat head. I ended up about a hundred miles away with a company that works with tractors everyday. When I called and said Ford 8N, they replied with a yep - we do them all the time. What a relief. They did a great job on it.

If cash is not an worry, I would buy a new tank and be done with it. They work well and will last too. To my recollection, no problems have been reported about them.
 
What Jim said. Coarse sand would work, but might be hard to clean out completely. Wash out the varnish first. Then make up a way to attach it to the back wheel of your other tractor. Other tractor not running? ..Make up something like a bbq spit. Sort of like the tumbler of your dryer. People here have done this before. Maybe they made a wood cradle to fit wheel to tank. If your rust is just surface rust and not too heavy it should work. HTH
 
we have 2 others that run so we can sure attach it to one of them and drive it around for awhile! It's just surface rust. Thanks everyone!
