Where is the serial number located on a 1949 ford 8n tractor

On a flat pad at the top of the block behind the oil filter. It is hand stamped so may be hard to read. Highlighting the number with a flashlight may work.

.there's a flat boss on the side of block that it's stamped into. right up near the head. the number is hand stamped so usually their very light and hard to read. you' prob have to clean a lot of old paint and grease to see it. as you're sitting in the seat it's on your left and to the right of the oil filter.
