Installing new water pump and fan 52 8N

After two weeks of waiting for my local New Holland dealer to get my fan in I'll be ready to install the new water pump and fan tomorrow. I was able to remove them as one unit - mostly out of necessity because one of the four fan bolts was rounded off. Fortunately there was just enough clearance to ease the fan/pump combo out of there.

So, is there any reason why I shouldn't do the same thing when reinstalling?
Attach the fan to the pump then attach to the tractor as one unit? Seems like it would make bolting the fan to the pump a lot easier.

I'm hoping the new fan will come with the bolts. I only have three of the four old ones available for reuse.

When I have replaced water pumps, I did not remove
the hood, thus it was necessary to remove the fan
and leave it in the shroud while removing the pump.
I don't think you are going to get new bolts with
the new fan. I have a couple of coffee cans of 9N
bolts and nuts in the shop. I might have an extra.

I did remove the hood. It's a bit more trouble but gives you so much more access to the fan/pump area without having to squat, bend over.

Are those bolts for the fan specialty bolts. Hard to find.
Wonder if the New Holland store will have them.

I suspect you can get new bolts at your local Hdwe. store-get all new ones and use a smidge of anti-seize. HTH

Most likely you will find that the "ears" on the "new" water pump are too thick, requiring replacement of the studs in the block.

In any event, I recommend removing the radiator to prevent damage.

Kenster........protect yer radiator with some CARDBOARD. You probably will find CUTTING yer fanbelt out to be eazier. Gitta NEW 5/8" x 41" belt to fit yer 5-nipple sidemount. Most belts are 1/2" or 3/8". Put puckey on just the waterpump, NOT the engine side of the gasket. I use regular chassis grease to hold the gasket in place for installation. You can gitt NEW bolts at the hardware store. I would NOT USE rounded headed bolts. ........Dell

I got the fan belt out of the way before I removed the fan and pump. It is a 5/8 inch belt and was only a couple years old and is in good shape. I was wondering about using gasket grease and have a tube... pump side only!

I hope I don't have to replace the studs. I've heard of someone having to do that but most have reported it was not necessary. I'm not sure how to even do that.

Still would like advise on whether to join the fan to the pump BEFORE installation or install them separately. Bolting the fan to the pump before installing seems like it would be a lot easier.

It makes little difference if the fan is attached to the pump IF the radiator is removed, which is a very small job with the hood already removed.

With the radiator in place you will have difficulty getting the fan onto the pump OR the pump onto the studs.

Just remove the radiator to make things simple.

Removing the radiator was a big help. And easy to do. Thanks for that suggestion.

Issues:

1. Having a hard time getting the radiator back on with sufficient clearance for the fan blades. When I push the fan through by hand the blades just barely rub against the overflow tube. I've got the radiator shimmed to where it is almost beyond perpendicular and may be leaning toward the front of the tractor a tiny bit. What should I do to insure proper clearance.

2. Just above the "smile" shaped hole where the pump mates with the block, there is a 1/4 inch hole. No bolt could possibly go there but it must be meant to be open because the gaskets are cut with a hole in the same spot. What is the hole for?

3. On the metal face plate there is a 'thumb' sticking out about four o'clock (mounted) with a nut welded on it. What's that for? The only thing I can think of is a vestigial mount for generators?? (I have an alternator.)

4. Got the fan/pump installed today. Put the radiator back on and the hoses. Added straight water for testing purposes (don't want to waste my antifreeze). When I filled the radiator, even without pressurizing there was a leak coming out of the top between the face plate and the block. I pulled everything off again and DOH! I forgot to put on the gasket between the faceplate and the block. Scraped off the old gasket and cleaned up the block face and quit for the day. Miller time.

Sorry to bump this but my project is on hold until I can figure out what to do.

I have a follow up question....

The metal face plate that goes between the pump and the block-- is it necessary? That thumb that sticks out about four o'clock (when mounted) that has the nut welded on serves no purpose on my tractor, which has an alternator. Can I just leave it off and bolt the pump directly to the block--with a gasket, of course.

Answers to the previous question (just above) will be helpful if anyone has time. I really need to get running again.
