Part Found in Oil Pan

I am rebuilding a 1948 8N with a front mount distributor and it has been converter to 12 volts.
When I took the oil pan off, there was the remains of a part in the oil pan. The part appeared to have been there for quite some time. The part was about 2 inches in diameter, has a about a 1 5/8 D shaped hole. The part is about .080 inches thick. A small section appears to been broken off.
The tractor ran fine before the tear down except it was burning considerable oil.
I have not been able to identify the part by looking through the parts manual.
Does any one have any idea where this part came from and what it is called ?

It is part of an old starter bendix. It is nothing to worry about. I doubt that it was in the actual oil pan. I would say that it was most likely in the bellhousing part of the oil pan which is where it would end up if a bendix came apart.

that's funny, i just found the same thing in mine and had to post on here about it about a month ago. i bet this happens all the time!

as said... it's part of a starter drive gear.

now. if you found it in your oil pan.. you have a HUGE problem.. as you have a hole in your oil pan

I bet you found it in the dry area of the bellhousing AFT of the oil pan.. right?

I have a 1947 8n. My starter would not work,so I took it off and I found the same part in bottom of bell housing. I removed it with a magnet.geter done! God bless

In the oil pan or the bell housing??? If in the pan for sure and not the bell housing it can not be a starter part since the pan is sealed from the bell housing. That said it may have fell out of the bell housing and you did not notice it when it fell.

He said it was in the oil pan. Probably when last overhauled someone let it fall in and did not know it. No problem, will run and cause no problem as he said.

Not to worry. Back in the day I would find that part and more in the 'dry' side of nearly every N pan I removed.

Thank you for all the replies and help.
The part was in the back of the oil pan on the wet side. It was not in the part of the oil pan that is dry and is part of the bell housing. The oil pan looks fine. There are no holes etc. The part was stuck to the bottom of the oil pan by sludge. I was able to break it loose with my fingers. The part was pretty well oxidized like it had been there for a long time. I was not able to find the piece that was broken off. Also notice that the part is deformed quite a bit.

Regardless of where you found it, that is part of the starter drive. There is no part internal to that engine that looks like that. If these tractors could only talk!

Something is wrong in the dialog in this thread. Maybe someone wastrying to pull a good one by dropping that part down the oil filler hole. That would be the only way I know of to get that part into the crankcase and down into the OIL PAN.
