I am looking at a ford 8n which appears to have a sherman lever on the left and right side and the gentleman says it has the cable for the sherman which i don't understand. I can't figure out how to upload pics but would be happy to email the pics if someone can help me out. Thanks

lisa they have to be on a site such as photo bucket to do a upload i try to post them later if you want to email them to me at [email protected], im very curious as to what you have found lol

Lisa........the is only room for 1-Sherman aux tranny. They tried the dashboard mounted "BALL" shifter design with flexible armored cable and that FROZE the inner cable and rendered the ball shifter inoperable. So many Shermans were converted to regular 2-speed installations with the shifter lever over yer left toe. ........twinkle-toes Dell

You almost have it. You need to wrap each of the photobucket URL's above in a BBCODE image tag like this:

I don't see the lever on the right side Lisa.
I do see the lever on the left, and the cable, so as Dell said, maybe converted from the froze up cable.

I was just wondering what the lever on the right side is just below the air cleaner? I know there is only room for one. Thanks for fixing the pics!

Look right below the air cleaner.

Ah, I see what you're pointing out TOH, I just can make out what it is.
I tried blowing the picture up, but as usual it gets too grainy for me to see clearly.
Any chance we could get a closer picture Lisa?

lisa sorry i didnt get back on i had a emergency here and just got back to the computer looks like you got them posted though my thoughts is the lever on thge left side is actually replacing the cable on the dash 1 sherman only to a n which is plenty , let me know if you want the other pics posted

ive tried blowing up the pic of the right hand lever to distortion, but i cant see what its attached to clear either, can you get a pic of this lever real close? i dont know if it was a attempt to operate the sherman from the right side, or if its doing something else

It is a tractor we were possibly looking to purchase so no go on a closer pic unless i can get the guy to go take a closer one. I tried enlarging the pic on my computer too and it gets too distored. I will work on getting a new pic and post back.

It is the combo transmission. He took the pic too high on the right side. So now my question is... He came down to a grand for the price. It's 4.5 hours from us. Fenders are decent. Previous owner had a problem with the sherman not wanting to come out of whatever hi or low that he had it in, so the guy that has it now just got it into whatever gear he could and left it like that. Didn't sound like he knew about pulling the lever out. Is it worth the time and money?

Lisa........the 3-speed combo is worth $$$$ on E-bay; but only a few $$ installed in tractor. Strange, eh? Surprizingly enuff, you can gitt rebuild kits fer the Sherman from "Red-Rock" and others. Shermans, like yer 8N's main 4-speed tranny are NOT shifted on the fly like yer sportscar. Just putter in gear and slip yer clutch. (they're made to be slipped) The carb governor will automatically increase horsepower as needed to go.

The "balls to the walls" dashboard cable shifter was ONLY 2-speed OVERDRIVE. The 3-speed Sherman has a crooked dogleg shifter over the left toe. I had my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N 3-years before I found the "3rd-gear" in my 3-speed Sherman. (duh!!!)

As to tractor value, it is all "negotiable"; there are NO "Blue-Books" like used car dealers. Iff'n it starts and moves, 8N's are probably worth $2000-2500. Shiny new paint, makes me "suspicious". Good rear ag-bar tires are worth MORE than shiny paint.

Wanna make a quick-buck seller nervous? Ask to make a "compression" test. Ford specs: 90psi min. Good engines 110psi, NEW engines are 125psi. That is all "jargon" to you, but don't worry. Compression gauges sell for $20 (cheap) and include instructions. As I said, it is good fer shadetree neubies to ask questions.

Squander $25 (cheap) for the I&T FO-4 manual. It even has pictures for the reading challenged.

Buy it right and iff'n it don't meet yer expectations, sell it again. You may have a $200 "lesson", but that is cheap. ........instructor Dell

A lot of "pricing" is location. Tires of course are also very important.
I see the front ones do not match, but if they're usable that may be all you need.
I can't judge the rears from the pictures, those are expensive.
If you look at the radius rods and the drag links in the pictures, you can see the
ones on the left side of the tractor seem fairly straight, but the ones on the right
side are bent to the point where they nearly touch.
That may not bother you as far as usage goes either, but to me would be
something to consider because it may be a sign of abuse or accident.
If you can work on them yourself, they're great little tractors.
I wouldn't have any heartburn spending a grand on a good running 8N.
Four and a half hours away I would hope you have your own trailer and don't have to hire hauling it out.

Yes we would go get it ourselves. We currently have 4 with 2 that we bought non running for winter projects. Love those little tractors. It didn't sound like it was running. Sounded like he was hauling wood last fall and it quit and he never tinkered with it. So maybe just something easy to fix. Are the sherman combo parts hard to find if we did have to rebuild it?
