pto shaft difficult snap rings

re plaseing oil seal on my 51 8n. the last one i did i had trouble removing the large snap rings. pry with screwdriver and a lot of cussing is there a easie way or a large pair of snap ring pliers that arent expensive. it maybe my mechanical abilty tthat may be the problem thanks rj in wyo

Invest in a [b:99105a28ad][u:99105a28ad]good[/u:99105a28ad][/b:99105a28ad] pair of fixed tip external snap ring pliers. Not one of those one size fits all internal/external convertible pieces of junk. I like the heavy duty Knipex pliers from McMaster - they make life so much easier:

Those are "different" and similar to the internal ones used to retain the bearings in the PTO shifter housing. The PTO housing ones are a real PITA. These look to be a variation on modern constant section retaining rings that are designed for thrust loads. I have a pair of "flat nose" external snap ring pliers that I suspect will "get-r-done". I bought the pliers for similar rings used to locate the shaft bearings on the belt drives in my lathes. Got to be better than a couple screwdrivers.

2 small flat blade screwdrivers will pop and chase the ring out. No special tools needed. ( though you can certaintly use them if you have them! )

They are the same as the ones in the pto shifter housing. Being internal, any type of plier just sets them tighter into their groove. Like Chris said, two small pocket screwdrivers and about 5 seconds time will spiral them right out.

OK - got it. I was under the (miss)impression they were external. I've had my hands on the shifter ones and I am familiar with that process. You must have had more practice than me because I struggled with them

I think every dern ford I've bought has the dreaded leaky pto seal or bad bearing.. seems nobody wants to fix em... thus, that lil drill John smith talked about does tend to get 'practiced' alot. he's right. once you pop one edge and anchor it a bit, the other screwdriver just chases it out.

kinda like using 2 tire spoons and dismounting a tire.. if you can relate to that.

and he does mean smal.. no large screwdrivers. the lil kind with a clip that you can put in a shirt pocket and then realize you just messed up your shirt..

If you complain about tools being expensive you will do without them for years and use make shift methods.I bought my snap ring pliers back when I was making 40.00 a week.Still in my tool box and helped on trans mission work for 55 years.Try opening gas lines with out the right tools.Doing with out good tools is false economy.
