Identified neighbors tractor 9N not 8N

So I now have my neighbors tractor.. I have figured out that its a 9N not a 8N.. Some wire brushing, solvant, bright lights.. I could make out the serial number. DOnt have it with me but was something like 9N299558.. Believe to be 47'year.. He had converted from 6 to 12 and it ran for couple weeks then it had rained and now wont run. Said it was draining the battery.. So I pulled battery.. Guessing in the two years sitting out it has prob Frozen twice..Anyway wont take a charge...shorted across terminals no spark at all..starting this weekend to look at his wiring to make sure all is right..also plan to clean all connections and drain gas..Believe since it had ran before but drained battery prob just a small wiring problem.. Hope good cleaning, new gas, wire check and new battery she'll be good as old...ha thanks for the support on here.. Im a J.D. tractor guy myself thats what im familiar with but looking forward to this small challenge.

Ain't nothing challenging about these old simple tractors. If it's a 47 it aint a 9N. 9N was made from 39-41, 2N from 42 to 47 and 8N started in 47 and ran until 52.

3 speed is a 9 or 2N 4 speed is an 8N unles it's a farnken tractor.

If it is a 1947 then it is not a 9N but a 2N very close to the same but not the same. As for a battery drain that could be a bad alternator as for a no start good chance the points need cleaned and or replaced. To work on it to remove the 2 bolts holding the distributor in and work of it on the bench. Distributor only goes on one way unless you force it and then you break it

mss3020........old fergott to remind you the points on the weird 4-nipple frontmount are 0.015". Ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove the frontmount dizzy. Just un-snapple yer capple and letter dangle. Set/adjust the points (0.015") on the kitchen table. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts, then install the rotor and TWIST the rotor until the OFF-SET drive tang falls into the OFF-SET drive slot in end of camshaft. The OFF-SET drive scheme solves ignition timing as there are NO timing marks. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh?

Remember to "polish" the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points (0.015") after installation. Me? I use a clean $1-bill clamped between the points and PULL. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that. It is IMPORTANT to polish the corrosion after installation otherwize you will BURN yer points. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

P.S.......while the gray 9N/2N came from the factory with a 3-speed tranny, the early red-belly 4-speed 8N also had the weird 4-nipple frontmount flathead engine. The ONLY thing that really matters is counting the nipples for ignition parts. The later sidemount 8N's had 5-nipple dizzys.

i had the same thing happen to me serial nr on motor was 9n 1943 but after research on here checked the casting nrs on tractor frame turned out the tractor is a 1948, someone changed motors for some particular reason

Yep your right.. miss read ID.. 2N is correct..

Many of these old tractors have had the engines swapped. Unless you know it to be original, the serial number may not be reliable.
