Guy one of my son's works for has a JD 4020 gas. He needs help with the ignition, mostly a tune up from what he tells me. I don't think the guy has the books for it. I need the tune up specs and any tricks to making em run right. He has gone through the carb but claims he can't find any points. Has a new cap and rotor. He has to turn the dizzy to start it and then turn it again to make it run right. He just uses it for a little mowing and snow in the winter.

Thanks

Rick

Sounds like the weights are stuck in the advanced position in the dist. He has to retard it to keep from kicking the starter , then when it is running he has to advance it again.

Thats what I'm thinking too. But he claims that when the changed the cap there was a bare metal plate and no points. I'm thinking that the plate is a dust cover and the points are under that. I know he's had the tractor for a while but isn't much of a mechanic. I'm going to look at it for him but it's 90 miles one way so I want to have all the help I can get.

This may sound dumb but when I had my first 4010 gas and 4020 gas an old JD parts man told me to get the tractors serial#, Block serial# and the distributer serial # because there are diffrent componets used over the years and they dont work with each other. The points are under the dust cap under the router button. Bandit
