I have found in this 8N engine , one piston that has a land missing between #1 and #2 ring, the gap has been filled with a ring that looks as tho it was made for this purpose, Since I have never seen this before, is this a common practice? Thanks

piston .... land missing ... been filled with a ring .... is this a common practice?

No , even a tight wad like me would not patch a piston .

You could hone a cylinder and run a used piston with new rings for a sloppy fit and make due for a long time but piston or ring fragments can shut it completely down in just a few minutes .

I have a box of used pistons if this turns out to be a patch job but new pistons are inexpensive .
