Would it be a good idea to drill into the pivot pin bushing threw the top of the axle to be able to grease the bushing?

If you are going to install a grease fitting you have to drill a hole in the bushing to allow the grease to get to the inside.

what about cutting a grease groove thru that hole as well? needed? or is there enough pin to bushing clearance ?
 
yea that was the idea, I notice the bushing that came out of the 49 front axle was wore through at the bottom. the idea would be better there were seals that could be placed on either side of the bushing. jus thinkin out loud again
 
The axle, and thus the bushing will be pivoting around the king pin. Because you want the bushing to remain tight in the axle, you don't want to apply grease to the space between the axle and the bushing, but rather between the bushing and the king pin.

To do this, I drilled two holes opposite each other in the king pin (so that the bushing would be more or less centered over the holes). From there I tapped the holes and inserted two 90 degree grease zerks inside the center of the king pin, so they are facing the front of the tractor and can be greased through the hole in the hood where you would use your hand crank. Now, you will have to file down the tops of the zerks significantly (there is plenty of material there, so no worries) so they will clear each other and get the second zerk started in the threads.

I wish I would have taken pictures during the process, but wasn't thinking that far ahead, and unfortunatly can't take pictures now as the tractor is 85 miles away.
 
Tumbleweed.........NO GREASE the front axle pivot pin. WHY? 'cuz all that dust will contaminate the grease and turn it into GRINDING compound. ........greasy Dell
