8n with a 9n motor

My 8n has a 9n in motor, serial # 9n18650. I"m bothered by this because it just does not get it. the 9n motor struggles. Does any now where you can find used motors at? This is a fron mount engine could I swap it for a side mount engine?

the pony difference 9n to 8n is negligible if at all. ( depending on what's been done tot he 9n, it may have a new head.. etc. ).. and there will be no perfromance difference in a side mount.

a good running 9n, 2n, 8n, should all do essentially the SAME work.

if yours is just worn out needing rebuilding.. that's another issue.. not what type of engine it has.

if you need MORE hp.. figure out how much more.. if you need about 6-7 more hp.. get a naa, or 6xx series. if you need about 18 hp more.. get an 8xx.

Like Soundguy says, very little difference in performance between an 8 or 9N engine. If you were to put a front mount engine in it you would also need the generator (or alternator brackets) for a side mount engine. Also you would need a 8N governor and the throttle rods as those are different on a 9N. Also you would need the distributor. If you are still interested, individuals part out tractors every week on ebay. Beware, you might have to rebuild an engine you bought that way. Probably be better off to sell your existing tractor and buy one that meets your needs.

thommoos........while the 4-nipple frontmount is rated at 23hp and the 5-nipple sidemount is rated at 26hp. (sidemount has 6.5:1 compression while frontmount has 6.0:1 compression) ALL new replacement flatheads ($150, cheap) are rated at 6.5:1 compression. That is certainly cheaper than $1500 for engine rebuild.

Learn how to do a "tune-up", new points (0.015), condenser and NEW sparkies. Recommend AutoLite AL-437, gapped 0.025" Keep yer itchy-twitchy fingers away from them handy-dandy carb tweek-ums. Iff'n you could not RESIST, ask and we'll instruct you how to re-adjust yer M/S carbie.

Learn how to test yer engine compression, Ford specs: 90psi minimum (new $1500 engine rebuild tests 125psi) ...and... learn how to change and adjust yer points (0.015) on yer kitchen table. Ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to remove yer weird 4-nipple frontmount and change the points (0.015) on the kitchen table. Just un-snapple yer capple and letter dangle. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and install yer rotor. Now rotate yer rotor until the backside drive tang drops into the camshaft drive slot. Now tighten yer 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh?

Remember to "polish" the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points (0.015) after installation. I use a clean $1-bill clamped between the points and pullet thru. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that. .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

My '49 8N has a '44 2N engine in her. The engines were interchangeable and I've seen other Ns that have had engines swapped out. My 8N hybrid works hard as the only tractor on our farm. As the others have suggested, you likely need a simple tune up or need to do a little diagnosis of potential engine issues.
