8n tracters

Willy.......the 5-nipple sidemount 8N first occured after s/n 8N-263843, about May 1950. ALL 8N's have 4-speed trannys while 9N/2N's have 3-speed trannys. Surprizingly enuff, the 5-nipple 8N-engine will fit the 3-speed 9N/2N's. All you need to know is weather yer engine is 4-nipple or 5-nipple for tune-up purposes. You can count nipples, can't you??? .......respectfully, Dell

Some time in the mid 1950 production. Early serial number 1950 8ns have a front mounted distributor and later numbers have a side mounted distributor. I don't know the serial number that it was changed. Maybe someone else will know.

(quoted from post at 19:17:18 09/18/12) could someone please tell me when ford put
side distributers (sic) on 8n tracters (sic)?
thanks in advance.

From oldfordtractors.com:
1950 Serial number 8N245637 - 8N343592
This was a big year for changes to the 8N. At serial number 247571 the engine oil pump was redesigned to use longer gears to provide more volume. At serial number 252845 the one piece shifter handle with the small forged knob was changed to a threaded handle with a black plastic knob that screws on. The TSX-33 carburetor that had been used for several years was changed at serial 260596 to the TSX241 model. [b:a112e8d8ca]A new engine block was cast so the distributor could be relocated at serial number 263844.[/b:a112e8d8ca] The engine now had a side mounted distributor with separate coil on the right side and the new 8N10001 generator was mounted on the left side of the engine.
