Ford 3000 PTO Shaft Leaking

I was mowing recently and the tractor went into a dip in the ground and caused the mower to dig in and stopped the tractor in its tracks. After Restarting and moving the tractor and finishing mowing I parked the tractor and the next morning hydraulic fluid was leaking from what looked like the PTO shaft...Pretty bad too. Do I need to pull the shaft and replace the seals or is there something else I should watch out for? I have the Service Manual which looks like it's pretty straight forward...Engage PTO lever remove bolts, pull shaft, replace seals etc. Should this fix the issue? I'm some what worried there could be something else wrong. The tractor is a 65 Gas 3000 and was mostly neglected before I got it so I'm guessing this has never been done...Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Thanks I will look for those things. I would also like to point out that I have never used the PTO since I got the tractor and this is the first time it has seen any use...it is possible that the incident was totally unrelated or exasperated the problem...

Ok pulled the shaft out. The Shaft doesn't appear to be bent from the naked eye. If push comes to shove I can put the Shaft on a precision lathe and check it by spinning it to see if its bent. The only suspect thing I could find was the razor thin gasket which was crumbling a little bit in the corners. The "assembly" seems to rotate just fine on the shaft. How would I know if there is a bad bearing or not? Also when I remove the bolts they didn't seem to take much effort to loosen...

check for shaft to beairng play.. if none, and hte shaft looks true.. repalce the seal and gasket ( clean flanges ).. and see what you got. ps. check the wear ring. make sure it is not loose too!

Is the seal hard to replace? What does that entail? I know the gasket just slips over the shaft. Also Is the PTO shaft hard to put back in? When I slid the shaft back in it stopped right where the shaft cover would start to slide in I'm assuming it needs to be oriented perfectly before it will slide back in to the tractor?

Can I replace the Oil seal without removing the bearing and housing? Is there a snap ring or something that I need to remove then pull the old oil seal out? Any tips for doing this?

yes on the inside there is a snap ring that sits in a groove... inspect the ring to make sure its tight and the goove is not worn out.. lot of problems when the groove is damaged and the snap ring pops out and then the shaft will move in and out too much when you make corners why mowing. So inspect housing for clean and perfect groove why apart. I have had to replace a couple of housings along the way.

I will definately check that out. Its funny you say that I have never hooked anything to the PTO I have only turned it on for a while with nothing connected to it to see if it works and then magically after connecting the mower and turning with it, it decides to start leaking...

Stevo7122,
When you went into that gully and the mower "bottomed out", you may have driven the PTO shaft into the rear of the tractor. When you hook up the mower, you need to check that the PTO shaft is the correct length. To do that you must make sure that it can extend and retract without bottoming out or coming apart. The geometry of your 3 pt as it relates to the PTO shaft is what determines these adjustments.
With all that said, you also must check that the shaft slides in and out easy. Grease must be applied to the shaft to make it move easy.

Pulled the shaft out today and am going to replace the Seal and gasket the Inner Snapring also needs to be replaced. Does anyone know where I can get one? The parts manual says no longer serviced and I cannot find one anywhere. The larger outer snap ring seems to be available but not the smaller one.
