Mccormick-Deering No.8 combine

I just was given one of these. Does anyone have any info, pictures, etc. on them?

Ohhhhh the poor thing. There is a lot missing, but I've seen amazing things spring up from a LOT worse. I have a little bit of info around here, I just have to find it. I'm eating now, have some trees to plant & I'll try to post back tonight if not tomorrow. Gorgeous scenery! Where-abouts are you from?

According to IH's Machine Product Listing (1978-79), the #8 Harvester-Thresher was made between 1927 & 1933. They do not list a production figure, but the parts manual states they were made at the Deering Works. Safe to say they probably didn't make a lot of them, maybe a few thousand. If you go to the link below, you can look at the paint & product committee decisions pertaining to your machine. The three decisions they made (#'s 44, 63 & 74) will tell you how yours was painted & give you a clue as to the year it was made, by the remnant colors you would find if you tear it apart. Yes, there's bits of paint hiding on there somewhere. If you look toward the bottom of the WHS page, you'll find a spot that says "Photographs and Advertising". You should be able to find a picture or two of the #8 there.

It came standard with a 10' cutting platform. The engine is a Waukesha model XA. Yours has the remnants of a bagging platform. The support & trusses for it are on the ground by the wheel in the first pic. There's a few big pieces missing, actually. The lack of radiator & rear seperator hood indicate you need a parts machine or you have a parts machine & you need to find a second to make a good one. Either way, IMHO it's not something I'd give up on. Plenty of those harvesters were pooped already, by the second world war & went to the scrap drive. If you do decide to fix it up, keep me posted, I may be able to happen upon a few parts (canvasses, knives, guards, etc.).

I've wanted a few older IHC harvester-threshers for a LONG time & just can't afford to make it out to your neck of God's country to find them. A McCormick or Deering #1 would be nice. There has to be one left somewhere. Good luck with your machine, if you decide to keep it.

would love to restore one of those types of combines. great pics

We have one that is not restored but totally complete including the canvasses etc.
If you need some pics to help restore we could get some in the spring as its sitting in a snow bank. We need to cut some trees and get it out and put away but somehow keep putting it off. Those are great pics.
