I have a 3 cylinder Ford 4000. I moved it back home from the coast yesterday. I haul it in a 20" gooseneck dump trailer with pretty short ramps, so they are really steep. It wouldn"t start when I tried to get off the trailer this morning so I though I would just coast it off and deal with it later. When it was nose down (it was on the trailer backwards)and just before the front wheels got to the ground I heard a click and the rear axle or transmission locked up. I had to drag it off the trailer. Now I can coast it, but I can"t pull it to start it. Is something locked up in the transmission?
 
It has the 8 speed and independent PTO. It's a brit tractor with the parking brake, too. I have a small problem with it going into 2 gears when shifting into reverse, so I think something slid when it was nose down and is now in 2 gears.
 
Could be... the shift rail detent springs and balls are worn out and the shift rails are sliding into gear instead of staying put. That would allow it to be shifted into two gears at once and lock up the transmission. pull top cover, slide rails back to nuetral position. look at rear of trans and there will be a spring and ball there for each rail.. springs are usually collapsed and balls are worn out. Also inspect shift lever for wear off the end that will also cause miss-shifts and lockups... you can weld the ball back or get a replacement cover and shifter off ebay or maybe this site.
