my gas tank gets hot.after a couple hours running my tank gets hot ,i took off the heat shroud and made an extra piece out of aluminun,and still gets hot ,any thoughts that can help thanks mike

Keep both the heat shield and radiator shroud in place.

Verify that ignition timing is properly set and that the centrifugal advance is functioning properly.

If all else fails, you can fit an aftermarket pipe with vertical muffler outside of the hood.

in addition to Dean's excelent advice. check carb mix to make sure she is not a hair lean, and also clean rad core and make sure fan belt is not slipping.

any over temp readings on the temp gauge?

One other thing you can do to help keep under-hood temperatures down is to paint the tank and heat shield silver. I painted my tank with silver engine enamel and the heat shield and muffler with silver header paint. Light colors neither absorb or re-radiate heat as well as dark colors, especially black. Even still with all these things, if you are working the tractor on a hot day it's gonna get warm under there. Make sure you have a vented gas cap. -Will

in addition to the above advice,
there is an optional 6 blade fan for your tractor that really moves the air.
drawback is that it is VERY loud.

farmers mods that I have seen
-asbestos sheet on top of the heat shield (probably can't do that nowadays)
-leading edge of the heat shield bent down, air dam style,
to catch air from the fan and direct it to the tank bottom
