5000 Steering sector

Last week my 5000 steering(older model with slave under radiator) started to bind up, and within a short time it completely lost all steering (wheel would just free wheel). I have removed the sector, and it mostly apart now, but having difficulty removing the shaft from the actual box. Is there any special consideration to remove the shaft? I did not take a lot of time last night after getting it torn down that far, and just placed it over a drain pan to drain out good so I could look closer tonight. I am not readily seeing why this happened, but all the 3/8 balls have dropped into the lower portion of the steering box which explains the reason for the free wheeling. Previously I had a large amount of play in the wheel (about 3/4 of a turn of the steering wheel). Any help is much appreciated. I have to admit this is my first experience with the internals of a steering box.

I am not that familiar with that box but typically if your balls have dropped out then the "recirculating" track almost certainly must have fallen apart somehow. They are usually held in place with a couple of small bolts and if one or both loosened up then you're done.
