Hi guys
I got a 861 diesel and Iam trying to figure out the year of it for
sure only the last few digits of serial number can be read. Is
there different number somewhere else that I can go off of?
On the radiator it is stamped 12/59 so I would like to kn ow if
its a late 1959 or a 60. Thanks, Jon

When the serial # can't be read, which is often the case with x01 diesel tractors, I think you have to start looking at casting numbers on the engine and various parts of the tractor for clues. Assuming these parts were actually installed on the tractor when new (often parts have been changed including engine) you can look at a few things. First, the engine casting code (found on the lower right side just above the pan rail), will be a code starting with B9NN (1959 to early 1960) or C0NN (later 1960 on) or 310609 if it's an earlier block. Many other parts will have casting codes with a format like number, letter, number for example 9A6. In this format, the 9 is for 1959, 0 is for 1960 and so on, the A is for January and 6 is for the sixth day so 9A6 = Jan 6, 1959. 1K26 = October 26, 1961 (they skip "I" in the month code) and so forth. These codes can be found on things like the upper lift arms, the hydraulic cover on top of the rear axle housing and many other places.
This will give you an idea when the tractor was built since it had to be later than the latest date code. Hope this helps. -Will
