I have a Gehl 4500 skidsteer with the inline four cylinder 1.6l Ford industrial engine (i-98). The motor is pretty well shot and needs lots of machine work along with the rebuild. So here is my question: Would a Ford 172ci conn6015 inline four have the same bell housing pattern as the 1.6l? Does anyone know if perhaps the motor mounts would line up or am I just dreaming? Thanks
 
I ran into the same thing on a Bobcat skid steer a few years back. If I remember correctly the 1.6 was a German built engine, very simular to those used in about a 1970 Pinto.Not sure anything else will be a direct bolt up. I was lucky and found one on an insulation blowing machine.I had to change the manifold and carb.
 
I've never compared them, but I seriously doubt a 1.6L and a 172 (or 134) would have teh same bolt pattern. I'd bet a 172 is longer, too.
The Pinto (and many other models) used a 2.3L. How similar it is to a 1.6, I don't know. Ford used a 1.6L in Escorts for a number of years - that might be a possible source of a replacement.
 
The 1.6 engine is still manufactured. First used in English Fords in 1959. The Pinto switched from that to the engine last used in Ranger pickups. I wouldn't mind having that engine for a display.

The VW Rabbit engine was the nearest competition for that engine. There are lots of Asian engines that would do the job now.
