just got this 650 ford nice tractor but jumps out fo 3rd gear if i hold the shifter it will stay in gear were do i start to fix it just order a manual today thanks carman

Not uncommon.

Not a major problem if it only jumps out of gear under an overhauling (coasting) load. Replacing the detent balls and springs MAY provide SOME improvement.

You are almost certainly looking at much more serious work if it jumps out of gear under load (pulling). In this case, it almost certainly will need at least a new shifting collar, which reauires transmission disassembly.

It should but you will likely not need to reference the manual.

The detent balls and springs may be easily replaced externally.

The three flat screwdriver plugs in a vertical column on the left side near the radius arm socket allow external access to the springs and detent plungers. There is a fourth beneath the foot board, again on the left side.

Once the caps are removed you can usually remove the springs and plungers with a magnet. You can order new plungers from CNH if yours are worn. I advise replacing the springs with new ones in any case.

Note: The plugs have compressed paper gaskets. These gaskets are still available from CHH (or were about 5 years ago) but they are almost certainly special order. They are also expensive, even more so if your dealer charges you shipping, which he will do unless you tell him to put your order on his regular stock order. This avoids shipping charges but will probably take 2 or 3 weeks. It pays to plan ahead. You can seal the caps with silicon if your gaskets are damaged.

Here's what the 5 speed plungers look like, new new to old.

Easy to see the wear. The difference was amazing with just that quick and inexpensive maintenance.
