Ford 2000, short of taking the tank out...

how would you go about removing some junk floating around in the last half inch of fuel left in there? The tank is nice and shiney inside, no rust etc, it just has some small bits of junk floating around in the fuel thats left in the bottom. I'd like to get it cleaned out and filled back up and running before the cold sets in.

I was thinking of putting a gallon or so in it and siphoning it out through the fill hole and see if I could move the siphon tube around enough and suck the junk out, rinse repeat, etc.

Also, there isnt any filter on the petcock that screws up into the bottom of the tank, I was thinking that if there was one there, it would probably clog up the petcock, good?, bad?, ideas?

Any better ideas floating around out there?

Same old response when somebody asks about a 2000 or 4000; IS IT A 3 CYL OR A 4 CYL?? 3 Cyl tractors are supposed to have a screen on the fuel tap and if it doesn't, installing a new tap with a screen after a complete tank drain will cure 90% of your problems.

I'm not familiar with the 3-cyl models and how the tank and filler cap are situated, but you may be able to do what you suggested with a siphon tube. I have taken a long rod and lashed the tube to it with twist ties (gently, don't crush the tubing) and allow the tube to extend just past the end of the rod. Then, with a bright flash light hold the rod down in the fuel and start the siphon while you have the discharge end of the siphon positioned in a fuel can with a funnel with a screen. Once started, you can move the tube around in the tank like a vacuum sweeper hose. If you can see the "crap" you might be able to suck it up. Worth a try. If your funnel has a screen you can see what crap you pick up and you can re-use the fuel. Good luck! -Will

Why not just remove the fuel tap at the tank bottom and drain the tank ito a suitable container? Filter the gas you get out and pour a gallon or so back in and repeat till you get all the crap and corruption out.

That's what I would do.
Get a large funnel under the tap and a hose to a container so you don't make a mess.
Any crud in the tank will wash out when you pull the tap.
If you don't have a filter in the funnel place a couple of layers from an old cotton bath towel in the bottom of the funnel when you pour it back in.
One work of caution: Before you do this disconnect the + side cable on the battery. You are working right in there close to where the main + cable hooks onto the solenoid. A stray wrench stroke, metal funnel or a false move could cause a really bad fire.

Edit: Slip the throttle rod off of the back end so you can get the funnel in there better.

Filling and flushing sounds like a good idea, only thing is it cant move and the tractor is leaning to the left, away from the drain.

Guess I'll jack it up and have at it, siphon later if I cant get it all.

I've been reading nightmare stories about these Holly carbs, I just tore this one down and cleaned it up and put it back together, guess we will see if it will work or whether a Zenith is in the future. Still cant figure out how that float rod spring goes on...
