5 speed trans,anyway to slow down for rototiller

I have a 660 with a 5 speed. What can I do to cut my groundspeed to use a rototiller? A sherman doesn't work with a 5 speed and I don't want to give that up. Coulds I use low profile tires;from a low profile tractor? Any other ideas?

Smaller tires might help, but the only thing that will work half way decent on a 5 spd live PTO is a combination of clutch and brakes.

I run my father's tiller on my 850 as is. I need to go over the ground twice, but I have to do that with my little tiller too. If you're trying to till new (not recently tilled) ground, you should plow it first anyway.

#1 these tractor never where made to be used with tillers since the tiller came out way after the 600 or 601 series came out. The SOS type transmission works ok but then you have the SOS problems. The only real way is to get a newer tractor or live with it and make multiple passes

About a month ago, I wanted to put a tiller behind a farm tractor. By the time I would get a tiller and a modern tractor that would go slow enough, it would cost a pant load. BTW, I didn't want to get a Ford with SOS. Dad had a 6000 with SOS and it spent more time in the shop than in the field. Ford even recalled our tractor and gave us a newer tractor, which wasn't much better. No SOS in my future.

I purchased a used John Deere 17 hp lawn tractor, hydrostatic drive, with a 30 inch counter rotating tiller. After disking over an acre and half of yard with a Jubilee, raking the trash off to one side, I tilled it with the JD. Was impressed with the results and it really didn't take that long. I then disked it with a 3 ft ATV type disk to put groves in dirt so when it rains, the seeds will fill up the groves and look like I had a grain drill. Just put the seed down Monday, waiting for the rains or snow.

Don't know what you want to do with a tiller behind a tractor. Neighbor has a 6 ft tiller behind a big Massey. His tiller is not counter rotating, so it does leave lots of clumps behind.

I've had both types of tillers and won't buy another tiller that's not counter rotating.

All I've got to say is I've had very good service out of my SOS tractors. And I have several of them.

Just make more passes... That 5 speed is a slow as you're going to go with standard gearing in just about any tractor. First was so slow in our 860 that it was simply never used...
New tractors are certainly no slower without a creeper box.

Yes these tractors were MADE FOR ROTOTILLERS as Ford/Dearborn made Rototillers for them and the HOWARD ROTOVATORS WERE USED on 8n's SINCE THE LATE 1940'S before the 600's or 601's came out .

BULL
